Na Koa remain perfect against Scorpions
WAILUKU - Na Koa Ikaika Maui has not left the friendly confines of Maehara Stadium since July 5. That is bad news for the rest of the Golden Baseball League.
Na Koa rang up a 4-1 win over the Yuma Scorpions in front of 640 fans on Sunday night as five Maui pitchers scattered seven hits.
Acey powers Na Koa past Yuma
WAILUKU - Welcome to Maui, Jermy Acey.
Na Koa Ikaika added Acey to the team last week from the St. George (Utah) Roadrunners and Maui's new first baseman came up huge in his fourth game with the club. He collected a franchise-record six RBIs in a 10-1 win over Yuma in front of 503 fans at Maehara Stadium on Wednesday in the opener of an eight-game series.
Capitals knock off Na Koa
WAILUKU - The Edmonton Capitals would like to book another trip to Maui.
The Caps are battling for the chance, which would take a second-half North Division crown in the Golden Baseball League and a divisional playoff series win to reach a possible championship series appearance at Maehara Stadium.
Na Koa lose after long layoff
WAILUKU - Simply put, there is no place like home for Na Koa Ikaika Maui. In front of big crowds or small, Na Koa had racked up an .800 winning percentage at Maehara Stadium before Monday.
Then Lou Pote and the Edmonton Capitals arrived in Wailuku.
Ruth picked up by Phillies
WAILUKU -Keoni Ruth was a key component to Na Koa Ikaika Maui's run toward securing a postseason berth.
He just won't be around to help the Valley Isle nine try and win it all.
The starting third baseman for the Golden Baseball League's South Division first-half champions, Ruth had his contract purchased by the Philadelphia Phillies' organization on Thursday and will join the Lakewood Blueclaws (N.J.) of the Class-A South Atlantic League.
Na Koa shut out Toros
Brandt, two relievers combine on two-hitter as Maui closes series with 2-0 victory
WAILUKU - On the heels of another brilliant seven-inning performance Wednesday night, Na Koa Ikaika pitcher Donald Brandt was scheduled to lead off the bottom of the seventh at the plate.
With two strikeouts already on the scorecard, however, a pinch hitter took his place, signaling the end of his night on the mound, too.
Na Koa rebound against Toros
WAILUKU - Harold Williams took last year off from the sport he's spent his life playing before realizing it didn't feel right to be out of the game.
"I needed to find myself and what I really wanted to do,'' said the Na Koa Ikaika pitcher. ''It didn't make any sense for a 6-4 lefty like me staying at home - that throws 90 miles an hour - and sitting at home not doing anything that's related to baseball."
Na Koa punch their ticket
Maui nearly surrenders seven-run lead but beats Victoria to claim playoff berth
WAILUKU - Gered Mochizuki jumped up and down around second base as the rest of the team stormed the infield, an elated dugout of players and coaches spilling out.
Winning the Golden Baseball League's South Division first-half championship was no guarantee for Na Koa Ikaika Maui in their inaugural season.
Mackintosh shuts down Cimarrones
WAILUKU - Not even a slice of wood off a sundered piece of lumber was going to slow down Na Koa hurler Jason Mackintosh.
The shard barely hit him. Same goes for Tijuana.
The imposing southpaw allowed one run on four hits in an electric eight-inning performance, leading Maui to a 3-1 victory over the Cimarrones in Golden Baseball League action on Saturday night at Maehara Stadium.
Na Koa split doubleheader
WAILUKU - Wow, how fast things change in the Golden Baseball League.
After winning the first four games of their series with the Tijuana Cimarrones convincingly, Na Koa Ikaika Maui lost the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday 2-1. As a sweep appeared imminent, Na Koa turned the tables late in the second game.
Baldwin High School graduate Gered Mochizuki capped a comeback from a 4-0 deficit with a cannonading blast to deep center field, a ground-rule RBI double that tied the nightcap 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh, the final scheduled inning because of the doubleheader format.
Maui Boys of Summer
WAILUKU - The good news is they're home. Finally
After 19 adventurous days in Canada, Na Koa Ikaika Maui will make their home debut tonight at Maehara Stadium against the Tijuana Cimmarones in a Golden Baseball League game that begins at 6:05 p.m.
Just being back on the Valley Isle with the 2-13 Cimmarones coming to town is buoying the spirits of the first professional baseball team to call the island home since the Maui Stingrays closed shop in 1997.
Na Koa back at .500 with 7-4 victory
VICTORIA, British Columbia - This time, things went the way Na Koa Ikaika Maui and Jerry Spradlin had in mind.
One night after surrendering a one-run lead in the final inning of a walk-off loss, Spradlin - a 6-foot-8, 42-year-old former major leaguer - got the final three outs in a 7-4 win for the Valley Isle nine over the Victoria Seals.
Both teams are 2-2 in Golden Baseball League play with the final game of the season-opening series set for today.
Seals rally past Na Koa in ninth inning
VICTORIA, British Columbia - Helped by a key wild pitch, the Victoria Seals scored two runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning and beat Na Koa Ikaika Maui 6-5 on Sunday.
Wilver Perez singled to start the winning rally, advanced to third on Colin Moro's base hit and scored on a wild pitch by Jerry Spradlin. Moro came home with the game-ending run on Terrance McClain's single.
Na Koa First Ever Win
VICTORIA, British Columbia --- Na Koa Ikaika Maui earned the first win in franchise history Saturday, hitting their first three home runs in a 14-3 victory over the Victoria Seals in a Golden Baseball League game.
Mark Okano hit Na Koa's first home run in the second inning, a two-run drive for the game's first runs, and Maui (1-1) led the rest of the way. Phil Avlas and Fehlandt Lentini homered as well as Na Koa totaled 13 hits.
''They kind of broke out, and it was a great win for the team,'' said Maui manager Cory Snyder.

Golden Baseball League Brings Pro Ball Back To Hawai'i - May 11, 2010
For the fourth time, professional baseball is returning to Hawai'i.
The Maui-based Na Koa Ikaika Maui is one of two new franchises that will debut this season in the independent Golden Baseball League, which begins play May 19.
The Hawaii Islanders played in the Pacific Coast League from 1961-1987 in Honolulu. Hawaii Winter Baseball, a developmental league for prospects in the low minors, had teams on Oahu, Maui, Hawai'i island (also known as the Big Island) and Kaua'i during its first stint from 1993-97. The league was resurrected in 2006 with four teams on Oahu, but shut down again after the 2008 season when Major League Baseball opted not to renew its agreement with the league...
